A traffic jam of new small cars, including the world premiere of a new Honda, will tempt fuel price-conscious car buyers at this year's Australian International Motor Show.

Honda will use the Sydney show to unveil the concept version of its new generation City - a light sedan based on the mechanicals of its recently launched Jazz hatchback.

Honda says the City was designed to offer small car customers a "smarter new way", emphasising driving smoothness and a relaxing interior feel.

To be manufactured in Thailand, the new City will be sold there with a 1.5-litre i-VTEC four-cylinder engine producing 88kW.

Ford, meanwhile, will use the motor show for the Australian premiere of its new-generation Fiesta light hatch.

The new Fiesta will be available in both three-door and five-door hatch body styles and Ford hopes sales will be boosted by the new model's dramatic styling - the latest expression of the company's "Kinetic" design language.

Designed and developed in Germany for sale around the world, the new Fiesta is more spacious, safer and more economical.

Ford claims average fuel consumption as low as 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres for the 1.6-litre DOHC Duratec four-cylinder with manual transmission.

Fiesta will also be offered with a new 1.4-litre four-cylinder, producing 71kW and mated exclusively to an automatic transmission.

Kia is also hoping that good looks will attract more customers to its new-generation Cerato sedan when it is unveiled at the Sydney show.

The Cerato is an all-new design penned by the marque's German-born chief design officer, Peter Schreyer, and features a new family face that will eventually grace all Kia models.

Powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine , Kia says the new Cerato will be sportier to drive as well as look at.

The new Honda, Ford and Kia small cars are among 40 new production models and concept designs being unveiled when the Australian International Motor Show opens at Sydney's Darling Harbour on October 9.
