Beneficiaries include the Surfrider Foundation, Surfing Heritage Foundation and San Onofre Foundation

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., August 29, 2006 – The 34th annual SURFER Poll and Video Awards presented by Suzuki Automotive will bring the world’s most renowned faces in action sports, music and entertainment to The Grove of Anaheim on Sept. 12 to honor the best in surfing and surf cinematography. This year the SURFER Poll will not only honor the top surfers, but also recognize some of the key organizations that have made a significant impact on the sport of surfing. SURFER Magazine, the industry-leading publication from Primedia Inc., once again is integrating a charity component to this year’s awards show, teaming up with the Surfrider Foundation, Surfing Heritage Foundation and San Onofre Foundation.

American Suzuki Automotive Corporation (ASMC), presenting sponsor of the 2006 SURFER Poll and Video Awards, has generously donated a 2007 Grand Vitara and 2007 SX4 to the Surfrider Foundation, a grassroots, non-profit, environmental organization that works to protect our oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984, the Surfrider Foundation's most important coastal environmental work is carried out by the Foundation's 64 chapters located along the United States and Puerto Rican coasts.
“Our intentions are to use these vehicles to spread the work of the Surfrider Foundation and build better community relationships within two of our core markets,” said Matt McClain, director of marketing and communications for the Surfrider Foundation. “One vehicle will stay in Southern California and the other will be sent to Florida. As a grassroots organization, we really appreciate this gracious donation from Suzuki Automotive.”

“Suzuki is thrilled to make this worthwhile donation to the Surfrider Foundation,” said Gene Brown, ASMC vice president of marketing and public relations. “With its roots in the Southern California area, surfing has come to be so much more than a simple beach activity, and our Southern California-based company couldn’t be more proud of our association and presence in the industry and along the coastline.”

SURFER is selling VIP tables to companies within the surf industry for $1,500, with proceeds being donated to the Surfing Heritage and San Onofre Foundations. Proceeds from the sales of VIP tables will be divided between the two foundations. The Surfing Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, presenting and promoting surfing’s heritage for the appreciation and education of current and future generations; and to achieving the goal of surfing being more accurately understood, represented and enjoyed.

The proceeds from this event will be used to assist the Surfing Heritage Foundation with the scanning, collating and metatagging of 46 years of SURFER Magazine photos.

“We plan to digitally scan, preserve and archive thousands of photos, building accurate presentations of surfing heritage for current and future generations,” said Tom Pezman, executive director of the Surfing Heritage Foundation. “We are honored to work on this historically significant project between SURFER and Surfing Heritage.”

The newly established San Onofre Foundation will use the donations from the sales of VIP tables to help improve and preserve Trestles.

“We aim to provide immediate help to improve access to Trestles, creating a safe pedestrian railroad crossing to Lower Trestles and an environmentally friendly raised boardwalk above the marsh at the Lower Trestles access trail,” stated Steve Long, co-operating associate liaison for the newly established San Onofre Foundation. “San Onofre State Beach is a ‘World Treasure’ and we want to make sure it must never be compromised.”

The 2006 SURFER Poll and Video Awards presented by Suzuki Automotive will be covered exclusively on www.surfermag.com and broadcast for the fourth consecutive year in a one-hour television special on FUEL TV. Previous years included pre-show and award highlights, athlete interviews and SURFER Poll history. Check www.fuel.tv for airdates and times.
Attendance is by invitation only. For more event information visit www.surfermag.com/events/spa06/
