2008 Brilliance Chinese BS4 Compact Sports Sedan Review

With the BS4, Brilliance JinBei has entered the sporty compact car market. The 4.65 meter long model comes with a choice of two engines: A 1.8 litre engine with 100 kW (136 HP) and a 1.8 litre turbo BVA with 125 kW (170 HP). The 136 HP version from Mitsubishi Motors Corporation propels the BS4 to a top speed of 185 km/h via a five-speed manual transmission. The turbo engine generates maximum torque of 235 Nm and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 11.4 seconds. It is the first engine entirely developed by the Chinese manufacturer. An additional in-house development – a common rail diesel – will complement the choice of engines at the start of 2008.

Just as with the BS6, both the Comfort and the Deluxe versions distinguish themselves through comprehensive standard equipment: Every vehicle leaves the plant in Shenyang with metallic paint, parking assist, air conditioning, power windows, eight-speaker CD sound station, alloy wheels, eight-way adjustable driver’s seat, and four-way adjustable passenger seat. The Deluxe version also includes leather seats, leatherwrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, power sunroof, and a CD player with MP3 functionality.

The BS4 safety package includes front and side air bags, seatbelt pretensioners, electronic brake boosters, ABS, and electronic differential lock. In case of a crash, all four doors of the sedan automatically unlock and the interior and exterior lighting is activated. Disc brakes and a dual-circuit braking system further enhance safety.

The design of the 4.65 meter long compact sedan was developed by the Italian design firm Pininfarina. The tulip-shaped pockets in the radiator cowling and the pronounced contoured hood are especially noticeable: Two decorative V-shaped beads are drawn down over the bumper and join at the front cooling-air intake. Slightly angled headlights that wrap around the corners round out the front. From the side, a bead guides the eye from the headlights to the stepped rear lights that extend into the trunk lid.
