The Citroën Xsara is starting 2003 with a host of new features. Responding even more effectively to customer requirements, it now boasts a new 1.4 HDi engine, combined with upgraded exterior and interior styling. At end 2002, Citroën had sold almost 1,400,000 Xsara Saloons, Coupés and Estates worldwide. The main milestones to date in the career of the Xsara were the introduction of the Xsara Windows CE – the first volume-produced communicating car – and the arrival of the 2.0 HDi 90 bhp and 2.0 Hdi 110 bhp diesel engines. Sales of diesel vehicles, as a percentage, are growing steadily. These results confirm the success of the HDi family, which has now been expanded once more.

Citroën is equipping the Xsara with the new diesel engine launched successfully on the C3: the 1.4 HDi 70 bhp. This new engine rounds out the Xsara’s current range of HDi diesel engines: the 2.0 HDi 90 bhp and 2.0 HDi 110 bhp.

The 1.4 HDi engine develops 50 kW EEC (70 bhp DIN) at 4,000 rpm with, on the Xsara, torque of 160 Nm at 2,000 rpm. A single rail supplies all four injectors with fuel at high levels of pressure (between 250 and 1,400 bars).
The new electronically controlled injectors precisely calculate the timing and quantity of fuel injection, particularly for the pilot injection (or pre-injection). The pilot injection (small quantity of fuel injected before the main injection) gradually increases the temperature in the combustion chamber. This results in smoother and more gradual combustion, with a significant reduction in noise and vibrations at low engine speeds. Acoustic performance is further improved by the highly elaborate exterior shape of the cylinder block and the precise ribbing used to stiffen the lower part.

The common-rail technology works with the high torque available at low engine speeds to establish a particularly high level of driving pleasure with significant improvements in acceleration. In correlation to this, fuel consumption – and consequently CO2 emissions – are cut by more than 25% over a standard combined cycle: 4.5 l/100 km and 120 g of CO2 per km.

Another traditional strong point of HDi engines is also very much in evidence: low noise and low vibration. The new HDi engine is available with the three body styles – saloon, coupé and estate – and with the Pack trim for passenger cars. This new engine is also available on the Xsara fleet versions, with the three body styles.

Styling upgrades

The Xsara is a car of imposing, robust and fluid design. The upgrades in exterior and interior styling aim to build on these assets, which are present across the entire Xsara range.

ROBUST EXTERIOR STYLING

The front bumper has been redesigned and now features integrated fog lamps (depending on the level of trim). The lower air intake grille has been redesigned and made wider. The horizontal bars feature chrome strips. At the rear, the boot sill includes a chrome strip on the saloon and coupé. The Xsara also gains two new body colours: Eau Limpide and Orageux Grey.

A PASSENGER COMPARTMENT OF DISTINCTION

The changes made to the Xsara passenger compartment create an environment that is richer, brighter and more modern than before, with a new dashboard colour scheme, new upholstery and a new decor featuring chrome-plated parts and touches of aluminium.

The dashboard colour scheme is based on Tramontane Grey, a grey of a lighter shade than the Ouragan Grey used previously. A number of new features can be seen in the passenger compartment. For example, the aluminium-look sill trim on the front doors is present on the Xsara VTS and Xsara Exclusive trim. The air vent controls and hand brake button feature a chromeplated trim.

The instrument cluster dials include a new silk-screened design and an aluminium grey surround(except on Automatic versions). The Xsara also gains new gear lever knobs and an automatic gear grid in mineral grey. Two new interior trim designs are available:

Sosie and Number, with the VTR and VTS trim respectively. For the leather trim, Narbonnais Grey – a new shade – replaces Tempête Grey. A new dashboard trim in “Metal Ebony” replaces the “Wood” trim on the Exclusive model. In the same way, on the VTR and VTS versions, the “Ondulation” trim replaces “Microcarbone”. Last, a new “Axis Grey” trim is available with the Pack finish (or equivalent, depending on the country).

Qualities maintained in terms of comfort, roominess and safety

The Xsara maintains its intrinsic qualities in comfort, roominess and safety.

It boasts a range of assets in active and passive safety. ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution guarantees effective braking in all circumstances. ESP and traction control, depending on the version, bring additional peace of mind for the driver.

The reinforced passenger compartment, four front and side airbags and two curtain airbags (now available across the PC range) provide excellent protection for occupants at both front and rear in the event of impact.

The Xsara continues to stand out for the impressive list of equipment provided for on-board comfort and well-being. The digital multiplex wiring brings the driver a range of valued functions, including automatic dipped beam lights, radio volume adjusted to vehicle speed and an excess speed warning.

The navigation system and electronic parking assistance are functions that also contribute to driver comfort.

Generous stowage space (including bins in the rear doors on the five-door versions and estates) simplifies life on board. The roominess and volume of the boot (from 408 litres under the parcel shelf to 1,190 dm3 for the coupés and saloons and 1,512 dm3 for the estates) are among the best on the segment.
