Fiat And Zastava Announce Beginning Industrial Cooperation In Serbia And Montenegro

September 22th, 2005 -- Fiat and Zastava announced today an assembly contract agreement to manufacture the Fiat Punto at Zastava’s facility in Kragujevac, Serbia, which is located 140 km South-East of Belgrade. CKDs (Complete Knock-Down) production, based upon kits shipped from Fiat’s Mirafiori, Turin, factory, is expected to commence within twelve months. Annual output is estimated to reach some 16,000 units. Zastava’s overall industrial investment will total approximately 15 million euro.
The Zastava-badged cars, assembled in Kragujevac, will be targeted for the Serbian market where they will be sold by Zastava’s dealership network. The cars will also be exported to Macedonia, Croazia, Rumania, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Albania.

Prior to the start of local production, CBUs (Complete Built-up Units) will be shipped to the Serbian market from Fiat’s Mirafiori, Turin, where training of Zastava workers will be completed along with this production.

By signing the agreement, FIAT and ZASTAVA have materialized conditions for the development of a mutual industrial coopertion as well as possibilities for the cooperation of companies from Italy and Serbia and Montenegro, which will be able to get included in the production of vehicle parts and production equipment under modern market conditions, including thereby also the successful and speeded up settlement of liabilities related to the repayment of debts from the past, as has been defined by the contract from July 2004.

Zastava

Zastava is a company with the longest industrial tradition in Serbia. It was founded in 1853. The first vehicle repair work began in 1904 and the production of passenger vehicles in 1953 against Fiat licence. The development of Zastava from 1953 to 1990 is characterized by continuous cooperation with Fiat, in the course of which 14 Agreements and many Annexes had been signed. Up to the present date over 4 million vehicles have been manufactured. An export has been materialized to 74 countries in the world.

The circumstances of the beginning of the nineties had an impact on the cooperation with Fiat. Zastava’s development was discontinued, but it survived as a potential integration leader of vehicle resources in the region.

Beginning with the popular ‘’Fica'', followed by Fiat 1300 and other models, Zastava has come to its tenth model, which will for this reason bear the commercial logo ''Zastava 10''.
