The Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) has announced the Writers’ Choice Awards, given to the top automotive participants in this year’s Spring Challenge competition. Held in Austin, Texas on April 23rd, the Hill Country’s curving roads around Lake Travis were a perfect compliment to the fifty-five vehicles entered. Conducting the back-to-back evaluations were fifty-plus regional journalists representing a variety of print and broadcast outlets.
Major manufacturers were on hand to enjoy a Lone Star welcome, followed by a full day of on-road appraisal. With a huge variety of vehicles representing virtually every automotive price point, TAWA members selected the following as their Writers’ Choice designees:

Writers’ Choice – Overall Ford GT

Writers’ Choice – Most Innovative Infiniti M45

Writers’ Choice – Best Design Mercedes-Benz CLS 500

Writers’ Choice – Best Use of Technology Lexus RX 400h

The Ford GT, which Ford bills as “the pace car for an entire company,” excited the journalists with its retro design cues, exotic performance, and tractable behavior. Infiniti’s M45 is an evolutionary design exercise on the outside, while offering significant innovations under its skin. With the Mercedes-Benz CLS 500, it’s all about the skin, offering one of the most aggressive designs to ever grace a Mercedes four-door. Finally, the nod in favor of the Lexus RX 400h was obvious, given its introduction of hybrid technology to the luxury SUV class.
