2008 Kahn Design SsangYong Rexton R-Line Review

You’d be forgiven for thinking we’d taken leave of our senses by declaring that a SsangYong Rexton SUV has been given a complete re-haul by the team at Project Kahn.

But you’d also be very wrong, as the new £29,995 SsangYong Rexton R-Line special edition 4X4 is exactly what happened when the South Korean car manufacturer stalked us and somehow convinced us to go ahead with the project.....

With a reputation built on turning what some might consider automotive frogs into what many would concur are automotive princes – or at least fit for the F1, or HRH – Project Kahn was under no illusions as to the task it was being asked to perform.

Afzal Kahn said: “I was initially reluctant to go ahead with the project. However, as I have said hundreds of times before; we can do absolutely anything to any car and many people may have been under the impression that we would not have been able to do anything with the Rexton.

“I believe we have delivered an outstanding product that proves there we know exactly what we are doing and can add our touch to any car. I challenge anyone to bring me any car and I will give it that unique edge.”

Built at Project Kahn HQ, the Rexton R-Line takes this several stages further with added luxury and design flair.

Inside: a high quality leather interior cossets the Rexton’s occupants. On the road, the R-Line has considerable presence with lowered suspension, a bespoke Kahn exhaust system and 22 inch Kahn Design alloy wheels.

The Rexton has climate control, electronic stability programme (ESP) with active rollover protection (ARP), hill descent control (HDC), ABS, parking sensors, cruise control, auto lights and wipers, side air bags, electric folding door mirrors and heated seats. Leather upholstery is standard, but the Kahn R-Line is further upgraded.

Transmission is a Mercedes T-Tronic automatic with permanent all-wheel drive. Suspension is independent all round. The Rexton R-Line is priced at £29,995 with a rear spoiler and Kenwood navigation system the only options.

The SUV is a five door vehicle which is equally as happy cruising urban streets and motorways as it is mud-plugging as a work-horse or leisure vehicle. It can seat up to seven people.

David Foster, SsangYong dealer development manager said: “Six months of reform and solid work mean that we now have the business model that SsangYong deserves. As well as offering buyers very competitive models that will work for them, Afzal Kahn has delivered a great product that will surely make headlines.”
