BREA, Calif. - Suzuki’s flagship SUV, the versatile XL-7, returns for 2006 with a simplified trim level offering. With its available third-row seating and strong 2.7-liter, six-cylinder, 24-valve, DOHC engine, available four-wheel drive with low-range gears and rugged body-on-frame construction, the XL-7 is built to tackle just about any type of family adventure – on-road or off. And as with all Suzuki vehicles, its quality is backed by the security of America’s #1 Warranty.
Sophisticated Engine and Transmission

The XL-7’s all-aluminum V6 engine provides 185 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, and has a tow rating of 3,000 pounds. Fuel economy is an estimated 17/22 mpg city/highway, making it one of the most fuel-efficient seven-passenger SUVs available in the United States.

Self-adjusting timing chains that require no maintenance drive the V6’s dual overhead camshafts and a specially tuned variable induction system (VIS) improves throttle response and overall engine efficiency. To help cancel noise and vibration, the engine rides on hydraulic mounts.

The standard five-speed automatic transmission provides good acceleration and fuel economy. The transmission has two operating modes: “normal” mode helps maximize fuel economy, while "power” mode optimizes the transmission shift points to minimize gear hunting while climbing hills or towing. Finally, the optional “DriveSelect" push-button four-wheel-drive system allows easy on-the-fly engagement of the four-wheel-drive system, including low-range gearing.

Smooth on the Highway, Rugged Off-road

Ride quality and control go hand in hand with the XL-7's independent MacPherson strut front suspension, which combines long wheel travel for rugged trail conditions along with ample steering lock for tight maneuvers. In back, a rugged solid live axle is located by a five-link system to provide the strength needed for serious off-road excursions and still provides a smooth ride on the pavement. The XL-7 offers 7.6 inches of ground clearance and aggressive front approach and rear departure angles, allowing it to negotiate rough terrain. Every XL-7 comes with P235/60R16 all-season tires and aluminum alloy wheels.

Room for People and Cargo

The XL-7’s 60/40 split-folding second-row seats and 50/50 split-folding third-row seats (on seven-passenger models) can be easily configured to haul cargo. This flexibility works especially well when it’s necessary to accommodate four people and long items such as skis, wakeboards or kayak paddles. The XL-7 has 43.3 cubic feet of cargo room available behind the second-row seats (with the optional third-row seat folded). When both the second- and third-row seats are folded, 75.1 cubic feet of cargo room is available.

Safety is Always a Priority

Comprehensive safety engineering is at the foundation of every vehicle Suzuki builds and the XL-7 provides clear evidence with its performance in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) frontal crash test. The XL-7 earned a “Good” overall rating in the rigorous IIHS 40-mph frontal off-set crash test – the highest rating available.

Its rugged ladder frame and energy absorbing crumple zones work together to reduce the forces on passengers, while high-tensile steel roof pillars help form a protective cage. An advanced weight-sensing front passenger airbag supplemental restraint system (SRS), advanced dual-stage front airbag SRS and front seatbelt pretensioners improve safety for the front occupants. A second-row Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) child seat system, as well as rear-door child safety locks, help protect children. For enhanced active safety, ABS brakes are offered as standard equipment for XL-7. Finally, a standard tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) with a telltale light in the instrument cluster alerts the driver if tire pressure becomes critically low.

Simplified Model Mix and Extensive Standard Features

The 2006 XL-7 features a simplified trim configuration. The base, LX and EX models from 2005 have been replaced by a seven-passenger seating option and available Premium Package. Standard features on the XL-7 include: remote keyless entry; cruise control; air conditioning with automatic climate control; 16-inch alloy wheels; TPMS; power windows, door locks and mirrors; AM/FM/CD audio system with six-speakers; and five-passenger seating – all for a starting MSRP of $21,999. The XL-7 base four-wheel drive ($23,199) has all the features of the base two-wheel drive, plus the "DriveSelect" push-button four-wheel-drive system with high and low range gears.

With optional seven-passenger seating and a rear air-conditioning system, the XL-7 is ready for family fun. In two-wheel drive configuration this package carries an MSRP of $23,699; with four-wheel drive, the seven-passenger XL-7 carries an MSRP of $24,899.

The top-of-the-line Premium Package starts at $25,499 and includes all the features found in the base five-passenger XL-7, plus: leather seating; a six-disc in-dash AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA XM Satellite Radio-ready audio system with seven speakers including a subwoofer; a power sunroof; fog lights; and running boards.
