Munich. The BMW Group increased sales in the first six months of 2006 by 8.0% to 698,470 (previous year: 646,543) BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand automobiles. The European markets continue to account for the highest sales volume by far. In Europe, 408,714 vehicles were delivered in the six months to June. This is an increase of 4.7% over the comparable period last year (390,242). In the American markets, the BMW Group increased its sales up to the end of June 2006 by 8.9% to 177,035 automobiles (previous year: 162,627). The highest growth rate in percentage terms was once again recorded in Asia, with an increase of 21.5% to 60,825 units (previous year: 50,070). Within Asia, the Chinese markets continued to be the most dynamic. In the period under review, 21,582 automobiles were delivered to customers here (previous year: 13,851), which is a growth rate of 55.8%.
For the BMW brand, the number of sales year-to-date rose by 11.0% to 597,120 units (previous year: 538,141). This growth was driven by the BMW 3 Series Sedan, the latest generation of which was launched in March last year. With 175,141 vehicles delivered, it recorded an increase of 36.9% over the previous year (127,950). For the new BMW 3 Series Sport Wagon, which has been available since September 2005, sales in the first six months of 2006 were almost twice those of the previous year, with a rise of 95.6% to 53,728 units (previous year: 27,467). In total, in the period under review, 254,338 BMW 3 Series were delivered (previous year: 195,694 / +30.0%). This means that this model series is responsible for 43% of BMW brand sales.

Construction developments to expand capacity in the Oxford plant to around 240,000 units a year determined sales of the MINI brand throughout the first half year. As a result, production levels were reduced— worldwide MINI sales for six months to June, at 101,063 units delivered, were 6.5% below last year's level (108,117).

Sales of the Rolls-Royce brand year-to-date reached 287 Phantoms, which is the same level as last year (285/+0.7%).

In the motorcycle segment, sales in the first half year of 2006 reached 56,103 vehicles (previous year: 57,287/-2.1%).

In the month of June 2006, BMW Group sales were 130,530 units (previous year: 129,294/+1.0%). This means that – as communicated since the beginning of the year – the growth rate was more moderate than in the previous months. There are two decisive reasons for this: The first is the launch of the new generation of the highest-selling BMW brand model, the 3 Series Sedan, in March last year. The model change phase caused the starting basis throughout the first six months of 2005 to be relatively low, which meant that growth in the corresponding period in 2006 was above-average. In total, the BMW brand increased its sales in June 2006 by 1.9% to 111,640 automobiles sold (previous year: 109,604). The second reason for the more restrained sales for the BMW Group in June is the above-mentioned expansion works in the MINI plant in Oxford, which continue to limit availability – in June, MINI sales were 18,817 units (previous year: 19,641/-4.2%).

Rolls-Royce increased strongly in June. Deliveries rose by 49.0% to 73 units (previous year: 49).

In the motorcycles segment too, sales in June 2006, which increased by 7.8% to 12,466 vehicles, were well above the previous year's level (11,566).

Dr. Michael Ganal, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for sales and marketing, said, "With the development of our sales in the first six months of 2006, we are still in first place in the competition amongst suppliers of premium automobiles. We will achieve a new record for sales in 2006 as a whole and defend our position as market leader.â€
