Artist Margaret Slade Kelley Urges New Orleans to "Rise UP"New York, 2006-10-12 – Chevrolet will showcase the art of Margaret Slade Kelley at the Essence Magazine Women Who are Shaping the World Leadership Summit in New York City, Friday, Oct. 13th. A resident of New Orleans, Kelley suffered personal loss during Hurricane Katrina last year, including the destruction of many of her original paintings.Kelley was one of five women, whom Chevrolet sponsored to go to the Summit last year, as strong survivors of the Hurricanes. One part of Chevy’s effort last year was to award Margaret with resources to help her get her painting again. According to Chevrolet Multicultural Promotions Manager Bridget McCarville, showcasing Margaret Slade Kelley is a great way to continue Chevy’s “Revolution to Rebuild” philosophy. “Last year Margaret was a victim,” McCarville says. “This year, not only is she a ‘survivor’, but her work is urging others to join the rebuilding effort.” Kelley collaborated with her son Brandyn Slade Kelley, to combine her art with a song Brandyn wrote. The art and music call for people to “put a face” on their giving, to help rebuild the area. “This art is a tribute to the New Orleans we love, and family and friends we miss,” Kelley says. The artwork, titled, “Rise Again New Orleans ” features a stirring collection of people reaching up toward homes. In the right-hand corner of the painting is the “Red X” house marking, a representation that became infamous as the nation watched the National Guard searching for life among the flooding. “The Red X was important to put into my painting because it is a visual representation of loss,” Margaret says. “Before Katrina, we had never had an occasion to see that before. The Red X reflects my pain about Katrina.” In “Rise Again New Orleans ” Kelley has modified the Red X to make it personal and to represent her point of view. Chevy’s Revolution to Rebuild At the Summit, Chevrolet also showed its progress on a Habitat for Humanity home, built in Houston, which will be made available to a New Orleans family displaced by Hurricane Katrina. McCarville says the Chevy team was really moved by its experience in building the home. “As a sponsor of the Music Festival and the Women who are Shaping the World Summit, Chevrolet has a strong connection to the Essence organization. But this year, we have a deeper purpose. As America's brand, we must do what we can to help the Gulf Region come back,” says McCarville. “What better way to pay tribute to the organization that promotes purpose and empowerment than to sponsor and build a home in conjunction with the Essence team? Years from now, a Houston family will still be benefiting from our efforts.” About Chevrolet Chevrolet is America's No. 1-selling automotive brand.
