Lansing, Mich., 2007-05-23 -- Three Michigan General Motors plants were awarded Gold Awards in the Neighborhood Environmental Partners Program by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) yesterday.

Warren Transmission, Flint Metal Center and Lansing Delta Township were three of only six Michigan facilities – and the only auto plants – honored.

“These awards are a recognition that when businesses and our communities work together to protect the environment, everyone in Michigan benefits. These facilities, along with their neighborhood partners, are demonstrating that protecting our environment, and growing Michigan ’s economy, go hand-in-hand,” DEQ Director Steven E. Chester said in presenting the awards at an event at the State Capitol in Lansing.
The NEP Gold Awards program was developed by the DEQ to recognize facilities and their community partners who have worked together to improve the environment locally by implementing ongoing environmental projects.

“A large part of GM’s work focuses on the future and how we can improve the environmental performance of our manufacturing and our vehicles. So, it’s a natural extension for us to join with others in the community to protect the future of the local ecosystem,” said Edmund J. Piasecki, director, Regional Operations and Abatement, GM Environmental Services.

Each of the three plants has activities that are targeted at the unique environmental needs of the communities where they are located. One common program between the three sites is their partnership with local watershed groups and Earth Force under the GREEN project which conducts local water monitoring programs for students. This year over 9,500 students in North America will participate in hands-on science lessons to learn about local watershed quality under GM’s sponsorship.

Earth Force President Vince Meldrum congratulated GM on the awards: “It is good to see this type of recognition given to a company that supports employee volunteer efforts: Without hundreds of thousands of corporate volunteers from across the country community based organizations would find it incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to do their jobs.”

Other companies that received the NEP Gold Award were Consumers Energy, J.R. Whiting Plant; Pfizer Global Manufacturing, Kalamazoo; and Smurfit Stone Container Corp., Ontonagon Mill.
