The decision to enter the supermini sector in 2002 was a major step in Hyundai policy towards building a stronger European presence. This single segment currently accounts for approximately 26 percent of all new auto sales throughout Europe. Because of this, it is extremely competitive, especially at the youth-oriented entry level sector. World-wide sales of 194,000 units in 2004 attest to the basic success of the Getz concept in approaching this market. As the figures show, the Getz has firmly established itself.

It has also demonstrated a remarkable ability to appeal to almost all of the diverse cultural and economic criteria across Europe, in Korea and in other important Hyundai export territories. In the process, it has been a key factor in introducing new customers to the acknowledged Hyundai virtues of durability, dependability, all-round economy, high value and enjoyable motoring. The new models, combine a major facelift with three highly significant new engine options. The result is a fresher, more stylish exterior, combined with a significantly improved interior choice and increased performance. This increased performance has also been complemented by the introduction of ESP to further enhance the handling characteristics. The overall result is a car fully capable of making even more new friends for Hyundai throughout the world.

New exterior design and styling

The extensive exterior facelift has been skillfully executed to preserve the original clean good looks of the Getz, while bringing it more into line with accepted European styling expectations.

The new fully-integrated frontal treatment features a redesigned engine cover with marked character lines which emphasize the unified nature of the grille, front headlight and bumper arrangement. The clear, wraparound headlamps, black bumper inserts and front spoiler with integrated fog lamps mean the frontal aspect is both cleaner, and more sportingly attractive. This cleanliness is further emphasized by the neater wiperarrangement and the way the characterlines meet the A pillars.

From a side view, the strong shoulder line contour unifies the whole structure, while dominant black waist mouldings add to the feeling of strength and stability. New wheel covers and alloy wheels, including a highly sporting 15-inch 5-spoke alloy design, further emphasize the dynamic styling, and serve to highlight the well-balanced overall proportions.

The rear aspect is marked by a neater bumper treatment featuring a wraparound moulded insert. The rear fog light has been optimally repositioned in the center of the rear valence. New clearer combination rear lights which further optimise signal visibility complete the styling modernisation. In terms of colour choice, three new mica pearl finishes, Space Silver, Blue Onyx and Midnight Grey, head a range which includes four solid colours and five metallic finishes. Here again, the emphasis has been on mixing traditional good taste with youthful exuberance.

New Interior features and colours

Hyundai Motor Company not only listens to the wishes and desires of our customers, we act upon them. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the fresh new treatment of the Getz interior. Two new colour packages and a new dual tone improved texture fascia head up the immediately visible improvements. In addition, the steering wheel now boasts an improved, full-punched leather cover and carries infotainment controls. The instrument panel has been redesigned and features new easierto- read LED colour graphics and a repositioned and redesigned center cluster containing the trip computer, fuel and temperature gauges, and ancillary warning lights.

The center console has been thoughtfully redesigned and is finished in metal grain. It features a new digital clock, more visible hazard warning button and the conveniently relocated cigar lighter plus additional (optional) 12v power outlet. The drivers seat now features an armrest and both front seats are equipped with active headrests. The rear headrests have been redesigned, both for additional passenger convenience and improved rear mirror vision. New fresher design interior fabrics and designs make their debut. Also, the two new colour packages add to the sporty and young flavour. These are available in Red or Blue. The colour extends from the cloth seat covers and door inserts to the leather cover on the steering wheel and shift knob, and are available with all exterior colour combinations.

Storage and flexibility

From the very beginning, Getz has received high praise for its versatility and storage capabilities. The basic premise of some twenty different storage facilities, including the under-seat tray, sunglasses holder and full complement of non-intrusive compartments, has called for refinement in the details. These include a new center console tray which adds space for extra small items. The glovebox is now illuminated, and the door mounted map pockets have been redesigned, improving both utility and appearance. In terms of seating flexibility, the flat folding rear seats with 60/40 capability, dual height driver seat, Space Wizard with three position rear seat folding capability, 5-way folding options offer exceptional flexibility and comfort. And with the rear seats folded double, there is an impressive 977 litres of useable luggage space. Together, these features ensure that Getz still remains among the forefront of this class.

New engine range

From a European perspective, the new 1.5 VGT diesel engine is the major newspoint. Designed and developed with major input from the Hyundai Motor Company R&D facility in Rüsselsheim, the unit is truly state of the art. Featuring a new manual transmission with revised shift, this unit is available in two power options, both featuring variable geometry turbo technology. It is available in both 110 ps and 88 ps versions offering 24.0 kg.m at 1900 -2750 rpm and 22.0 kg.m at 1900 - 2500 rpm. As with all current Hyundai engines, it complies with Euro 4 regulations.

The 1.4 delivers 97 ps at 6000 rpm with 12.8 kg.m torque at 3200 rpm. The sporty 1.6 offers 106 ps at 5800 rpm with 14.7 kg.m at 3200 rpm. In-house tests also reveal that it represents a 9% saving in fuel over the previous 1.5 liter unit.
