The Environmental Transport Association considered 1,300 vehicles, examining power, emissions, fuel efficiency and even the amount of noise they produce to create the definitive guide to buying the greenest vehicle.

Managing Director of Jaguar in the UK, Geoff Cousins said: "I am delighted we have won this award for the third year running. We fully recognise our responsibility to the environment and are committed to playing our role in developing technology solutions for our cars to address climate change " this award shows we are heading in the right direction."

Andrew Davis, Director of ETA added: "In our tests the XJ consistently outperforms its rivals in the luxury car class."

The XJ is renowned for the conclusive demonstration of its fuel economy credentials, achieving 1000.2 miles on a single tank of fuel " the average fuel consumption hitting 53.5mpg which equates to 139g/km of CO2.

The new car will introduce the highest standards of personal luxury and specification, including a panoramic glass roof. It will be the first car to feature the next-generation of Jaguar's aerospace-inspired aluminium body architecture.

All of Jaguar's new ultra-efficient Gen III petrol and diesel engines will be available in the new XJ, including the already acclaimed V6 diesel and 510 bhp supercharged V8 recently launched in the XF range.
