The sensational new Mazda3 MPS super-hatch, the fastest, best handling, best braking model in the hugely popular Mazda3 range, is on sale in the UK, priced from just £18,995 on the road. Reaching the same heights of handling prowess as the Mazda6 MPS, Mazda RX-8 PZ special edition and the iconic Mazda MX-5, the Mazda3 MPS is being marketed in the UK as a fully specified and lavishly equipped two-model range.

Highly sophisticated and remarkably refined, the front-wheel drive Mazda3 MPS combines sensationally spirited performance – top speed is 155mph (electronically limited) and 0-62mph takes just 6.1 seconds – with remarkable everyday practicality. Encompassing the true spirit of the UK’s favourite sportscar brand, the Mazda3 MPS appeals to both the heart and the head and is the perfect flagship for the Mazda3 range and the Mazda brand in the C-segment.

“In the UK, the sports hatchback market is both well established and more demanding in terms of styling than in other European countries,” commented Mazda UK's Managing Director Rob Lindley. “For this reason we have developed a Sports Aero kit model, together with Mazda in Japan. This version includes a larger rear sports spoiler, low-drag two-spoke sports door mirrors and lowered suspension, to enhance the vehicle’s sporting prowess even further.

"Priced at £500 fully fitted, I’m sure the Sports Aero kit will be immensely popular. Tailored specifically to UK drivers’ tastes, the kit remains understated in keeping with the whole ethos of the Mazda3 MPS and is most definitely ‘bling’ free. For the present, we anticipate around 70 per cent of Mazda3 MPS buyers will order this version. While over time we expect all Mazda3 MPS models in the UK to feature the Sports Aero kit as standard.”

The Mazda3 MPS is designed for a global market and annual production of this model in Japan will be more than 10,000 units in 2007. . The arrival of Mazda’s 155 mph super-hatch will have a ‘halo’ effect on sales of the Mazda3 range which are expected to reach a total of around 14,000 in 2007.

Order soon to avoid disappointment
Mazda UK already has a healthy waiting list for the sensational new Mazda3 MPS and with an annual allocation of up to 1,000 units for this country, customers are being encouraged to reserve their new car now to avoid disappointment. ‘Booking early’ can be carried out online from the comfort of home as Mazda UK has set up a new dedicated Mazda3 MPS Ordering Website.

Online customers visiting this special website (www.mazda3mpsonlineorder.co.uk) can choose between a regular Mazda3 MPS or the Mazda3 MPS Sports Aero kit version and go on to specify their preferred colour. The website indicates the anticipated delivery date for each model and customers receive a confirmation email acknowledging their order. The website also asks buyers to select their preferred Mazda dealer from a list of three nearest to their location.

Although each order for a Mazda3 MPS placed via the website will be processed promptly, a visit to the chosen dealer will be necessary to place a deposit on the new car and arrange individually tailored part-exchange or finance packages.

Power and Control, with Safety and Refinement
With one exception, both versions of the Mazda3 MPS are mechanically identical. The MZR 2.3 DISI* Turbo engine generates 260ps and 380Nm of torque (at just 3,000rpm) and drives the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Sophisticated computer-controlled electronics modulate the delivery of torque to minimise torque-steer and ensure maximum traction.

Petrol direct-injection and turbocharging are the primary sources of power for the 2.3-litre four cylinder from the MZR family of engines. Mazda has already installed the engine in the Mazda6 MPS and it will appear in the forthcoming Mazda CX-7. An electronic throttle and electronic boost pressure control ensure acceleration without turbo lag and lively throttle response.

The MZR 2.3 DISI* Turbo engine injects petrol under high pressure (115 bar) directly into the combustion chamber causing latent heat evaporation and a welcomed cooling effect, which has positive advantages for volumetric efficiency in the combustion chamber.

Direct injection allows a homogenous fuel/air mixture around the spark plugs, effectively retarding misfire. Ignition timing can then be retarded, which helps raise exhaust-gas temperatures. The engine’s lightweight, single-scroll turbocharger also contributes to this by limiting heat loss in the exhaust system. As a consequence, the catalytic converter heats up especially fast – an indispensable perquisite for meeting Euro Stage IV emission standards.

A relative high compression ratio of 9.5: 1 contributes to the car’s frugal use of fuel and to linear acceleration attributes with almost no turbo lag. To restrict wheel spin during heavy acceleration in first gear, engineers inhibited an extreme power surge via the throttle valves and the waste-gate valve of the turbocharger. And Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) also intervenes into the engine management system by monitoring any differences in the speeds of the front and rear wheels.

A six-speed manual gearbox makes driving the Mazda3 MPS even more fun. Despite having a three-shaft design, this compact transmission is almost the same size as the five-speed manual of the standard Mazda3 and, due to wider gear ratios, allows maximum utilization of the car’s higher engine output. The gearbox design ensures precise and clean shift characteristics and low-effort shifting through clearly defined shift travel.

Besides reinforcing the body structure, engineers also gave the Mazda3 MPS a more sporty suspension set up, without degrading ride comfort. Both the MacPherson front suspension and the multi-link rear suspension have higher spring rates, larger stabilizer bars and higher-performance dampers with up to six times more damping force, depending on damper piston speed. The sum of these measures results in a 60 percent reduction in roll.

Engineers also upgraded the brakes to match the increase in power output. Mazda3 MPS’s 320 mm front disc brakes are ventilated, while the rear brakes are 280 mm in diameter. A tandem booster, along with a larger master cylinder, four-channel ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist and Traction Control System (TCS) all contribute to maximum effective braking performance.

Models featuring the Sports Aero kit are equipped with special Eibach springs and dampers that lower the car by 25mm at the front and 10mm at the rear, to elevate the Mazda3 MPS’s already excellent handling to an even higher level. This kit also includes low-drag two spoke sports door mirrors and a larger rear sports spoiler.

Fully Specified and Lavishly Equipped
Inside, each Mazda3 MPS has MPS-branded sports seats with black leather cushion and backrest side bolsters and centre sections in black sports cloth with contrasting red stitching. Leather is also used to trim the steering wheel, gearknob and handbrake. Sporty touches include the instrument panel displays (with blackout-finish dials, amber-red/blue lighting and an ‘MPS’ logo), and aluminium pedals and door scuff plates.

Comfort and convenience equipment includes climate control air-conditioning, electric windows front and rear (with global closing), and a surround-sound BOSE® premium audio system with seven speakers, plus steering-wheel mounted audio controls.

For both models, a choice of four body colours is available – two micas (Black and Cosmic Blue), one metallic (Sunlight Silver) and one solid (True Red) – and every model sports 18-inch diameter, 7-inch wide 10-spoke aluminium alloy wheels as standard.

Mazda targets User-Choosers with Performance ‘super-hatch’
Refined and sophisticated, the new Mazda3 MPS is the complete antithesis of the boy-racer hot-hatch and will give both private and company car drivers the ultimate ‘Zoom-Zoom’ experience in a compact package.

“The Mazda3 MPS takes our brand’s Zoom-Zoom philosophy beyond our sports cars and applies that same spirit and performance to a model which has appeal to a much broader audience,” continued Rob Lindley. “The Mazda3 has always been praised for its driving dynamics, handling and road holding and clearly has a chassis that can handle more power.

“Typical of Mazda’s engineering philosophy, the Mazda3 MPS is a very complete package – not just in terms of its enhanced powertrain and chassis upgrades, but also with regard to its very high level of standard equipment. And alongside sensational performance it will of course retain the accessibility, practicality, reliability and build quality of its sister models.

“British motorists have had a long-term love affair with hot-hatches and our Mazda3 MPS ‘super-hatch’ offers them an unbeatable combination of performance, refinement, equipment, value and exclusivity,” concluded Lindley.

The exciting Mazda3 MPS is Mazda's highest performance hatchback and it gives fleet decision-makers, company and private car drivers the opportunity to choose an alternative to the performance car offerings from prestigious European marques. With its exhilarating dynamics, practicality and unrivalled performance, the new Mazda3 MPS is the ultimate expression of ‘Zoom-Zoom’ driving excitement in a sophisticated super-hatch.
