Sophistication and Strength On the outside, the new Mazda BT-50 has a design that communicates strength and high build quality. Available in three different body types – Regular Cab (two seats, long cargo bed), Freestyle Cab (four seats, centre-opening doors) and Double Cab (two front seats, three bench-type rear seats) – it has a longer body, taller door panels and cargo box sides, and major reductions in gap tolerances, for a solid yet stylish appearance. The front end has a new one-piece fascia that contains the grille, bumper, headlamps and fog lamps and does away with the protruding bumper of most commercial vehicles, lending the entire vehicle a solid look. Passenger-car quality is delivered on the inside with improved fit and finish everywhere you look. An all-new dashboard design includes a three-dial instrument cluster with silver rings around each meter, a silver-look centre stack, silver gear shift knob face and chrome-plated door handles for a strong sense of sophistication. Comfortable, Quiet and Functional Interior comfort was a central theme of development for the world’s first Zoom-Zoom pickup. New and larger seats have high-elasticity urethane foam material in the cushions for better support, especially on rough roads. The pickup’s climate control system has a new blower unit layout for better performance in both hot and cold weather. The cabin is quieter than ever before thanks to extensive efforts to lower engine and wind noise and the addition of more insulation in the engine compartment and cabin. The Mazda BT-50 not only spoils occupants with sedan-like comfort, it is also practical to use on a daily basis. A new slide-out tray is introduced above the glove box that is long and strong enough to hold up to 10 kg. The new floor console now integrates storage box, removable ashtray and four cupholders in a single unit for a higher quality feel. For music lovers, there is a new audio system with audio level control (ALC) that automatically adjusts the tone characteristics to match the speed of the pickup at any given moment for just the right volume level. Also onboard are sedan-like convenience features like power adjustable side mirrors, interior fuel cap cover opener, one-touch power windows, a removable ashtray that fits in any cupholder and power door lock/unlock from the driver’s seat. More Power, Lower Fuel Consumption and 2WD or 4WD A new MZR-CD 2.5-litre common-rail DOHC 16-valve diesel engine is introduced with the Mazda BT-50 that is more refined and fuel efficient than the previous engine, while producing 25 kW more power (now 105 kW) and 64 Nm more torque (now 330 Nm). The use of a variable geometry turbo- charger and a large intercooler ensure spirited acceleration and about 7 percent more pulling power in its 4WD version, while a variable swirl control valve (VSCV) combined with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and a high-efficiency EGR cooler ensures Euro Stage IV compliance and low tax costs in most countries. Mazda’s new pickup is still offered with two five-speed gearbox versions – a 2WD only version and a 2WD/4WD version that is ideal for commercial use or for more adventurous lifestyles off-road. This last version delivers both the classic pickup rear-wheel drive and 4WD, and features a larger transfer case that translates the higher torque of the new engine into improved traction. Enhanced Ride Comfort The Mazda BT-50 uses the same durable and dependable chassis systems as its predecessor, updated for more ride comfort and better steering attributes. Its double wishbone front suspension has been upgraded with 32 mm diameter dampers usually seen on big sedans, for improved ride comfort. The leaf springs supporting its rigid rear axle with Berlin Eye mounts are increased in length by 120 mm to 1,320 mm and larger dampers are used here as well. This not only improves rear damping response, it gives the rear end the strength to carry a load of up to 1,225 kg on the cargo deck of the 4WD versions. Steering has been optimized and completely retuned to provide predictable control under all load conditions. Mazda BT-50’s steering shaft, links, hydraulic power assist valves and the coupling joint that links the gearbox to the steering shaft are all optimized for better overall steering performance and a larger ball joint introduced for added rigidity. The result is improved road feedback and predictable steering wherever the road may take you. Active and Passive Safety A high hip point and a 60 mm higher cargo box that is easier to see from the rear-view mirror, give the new Mazda BT-50 better overall visibility from behind the wheel. Its large ventilated front disc brakes now have two-piston callipers (4WD versions) for improved braking under load and its rear brake drums retain the previous model’s load sensing proportioning valve (LSPV) that optimizes brake pressure for excellent deceleration effectiveness. Brake pedal feel and operation have been greatly improved as well, with the introduction of high-efficiency wheel cylinder caps, a reduced lever ratio – that improves the brake stroke by about 10 percent versus the previous model – and a new LSPV design that needs less brake fluid, all of which delivers reduced pedal play and a more solid feel when braking. Four- wheel ABS and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) are available (depending on grade). Protected by a strong cabin structure that resists deformation when struck from any direction, occupants are further protected by newly-introduced front side airbags (depending on grade) and three-point seatbelts with pretensioners and load-limiters in the front. New for all 10 Double Cab models are height-adjustable seatbelts for the front seats. Child-proof door locks and auto-reverse window for the driver (on models with electric power windows) are also fitted. A collapsible steering column helps reduce potential chest injuries to the driver during a serious front impact. |
