Drunk Driving Nation’s Most Frequently Committed Violent CrimeDALLAS (Sept. 13, 2005)–Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and national presenting sponsor, Nissan North America, Inc., announces the Strides for Change 5K, non-competitive walks designed to make communities safer by raising funds to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and to prevent underage drinking. The first 2005 event took place in Dallas and will travel to a total of 10 cities nationwide by the end of 2005.“For communities committed to safer roads participating in Strides for Change is key,” said Glynn R. Birch, national president, MADD. “Each year, nearly 17,000 alcohol-related traffic fatalities and half a million injuries occur. This should not happen and can be changed with community action. We are so grateful for the action of Nissan and for its commitment to health and safety.” Strides for Change enables corporations and individuals to team up with MADD to keep children and communities safe from the dangers of drunk driving and underage drinking. Participants form teams of 10 or more and raise $100 each through pledges. Strides for Change events offer a Health and Safety Fair, Kid’s Zone with activities for children and a pet area especially for their four-legged friends. With special thanks to Nissan, a car seat safety demonstration will be held at each walk allowing participating walkers to receive a safety card to take home for easy reference. “Nissan is committed to child safety and MADD helps make all communities safer—an unbeatable combination,” said Robert Yakushi, Nissan North America, Inc., director of product safety, regulatory and accessory quality. “The Strides for Change walks raise public awareness and funds to support the prevention of traffic fatalities that, tragically, often involve children and teens. We are proud to support MADD, not only as a national sponsor, but through our employees walking to create safer communities for their families as well.” MADD’s 25th anniversary theme, “MADD Celebrates Life,” recognizes the more than 300,000 lives saved since its founding 25 years ago. In 2004, MADD served more than 31,000 victims/survivors and continues to provide services to thousands annually impacted by the devastation of drunk driving.
