Nissan Seeks to Continue Winning Tradition at 2005 SCCA Runoffs

GARDENA, Calif. (Sept 19, 2005) – With as many as 47 drivers competing in 14 different Nissan models, among the nearly 700 entrants, Nissan has high hopes for the 2005 Sport Car Club of America (SCCA) National Championship Runoffs® presented by Kohler at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near Lexington, Ohio September 19-25. Nissan’s hopes are well grounded in history, since the company has won a SCCA record 86 National Championships since 1967.
“With more victories than any other auto manufacturer, we’re confident that Nissan will add to the total of National Championships and to the list of Runoffs competitors who have gone on to successful professional careers,” said Ron Stukenberg, senior manager, Nissan Motorsports marketing and operations. “The competition-prepped Z®s, Sentra SE-R Spec Vs, 240SXs, 200SXs and Datsun 510s that are competing this weekend all have a good shot to win their respective classes. But in our view, they are already champions just by making it to the Runoffs.”

Teams qualify for the Runoffs, America\'s largest sports car weekend, by finishing on top in points in 24 competition classes in the eight SCCA geographic divisions. Nissan drivers will compete in nine of the 24 classes, including Production, GT and Touring categories. While Nissans of all vintages going back to 1969 will be represented, a record 11 drivers will be competing in the current Nissan 350Z sports car in three separate classes.

The race weekend will receive full tape-delayed television coverage on the SPEED network. Each race will have its own one-hour show. This is the fifth straight year the network will televise all of the races.

A History of Success at the SCCA Runoffs

Last year, Nissan added one championship title at the 2004 SCCA National Championship Runoffs. Mark Dennis, driving his No. 80 Datsun 510 in the G Production class, took his first-ever Runoffs victory, joining a long list of prominent past Nissan champions. Joining Dennis on the podium was fellow Nissan driver Bill Wessel, of Madison, Wis., whose Datsun SPL311 finished third.

Dennis and Wessel were part of a contingent of more than 50 Nissan drivers competing at the Runoffs, with nine drivers finishing in the top five in their respective classes.

Nissan Zs, including the 350Z took three of the top five positions in the GT-2 class. Defending champion Jim Goughary, of Houston, Texas, finished second.

As always, Nissan Motorsports will be heavily represented at Mid-Ohio, providing technical assistance and parts support for all participating Nissan racers. Nissan is providing more than $75,000 in contingency and bonus money to successful Nissan drivers in 2005. Nissan Motorsports will also have special displays on hand as part of the company’s strong ongoing commitment to racing, especially among the amateur contingent.

“For many of our drivers, they race because it’s in their blood, they have a passion for the sport – these drivers don’t become rich in Club Racing,” said Stukenberg. “If they have the faith in our products to race them, then we’re thrilled to share with them the technical expertise we’ve learned over the years, the parts they need to be successful and reward them for their success.”
