New Opel Corsa: Successful Start of Production in Spain Review

Zaragoza, Spain, 2006-09-26 -- Today, General Motors Corp. Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner and the President of the Aragon region, Marcelino Iglesias Ricou, jointly drove a new fourth generation Opel Corsa off the production line in GM’s plant in Zaragoza, Spain. The new Opel Corsa will celebrate its market introduction later this week (end of September) and has already achieved a high five-digit number of presales across Europe.

New Opel Corsa: Successful start of production in Spain

The model driven by the GM CEO and the President of Aragon carries the production number 15,000. It is a 5-door version in Cosmo Blue Air color, fitted with a sunroof and powered by a 1.3 CDTI engine with 90 hp. The car will be shipped to a Spanish dealer. GM dealers in Spain have already sold a total of 6,000 new Opel Corsas.

During the event, which was also attended by the President of GM Europe and the managing director of GM España, Mr. Wagoner said: Throughout GM and throughout the auto industry, the Zaragoza plant has a well-earned reputation for innovation and quality innovation in management-union relations, as well as in adapting to the competitive realities of today’s global auto business ... and quality in the way they build cars.

The President of the Aragon Government underlined in his speech the GM facility’s importance in the development of the region and said: I want to express my gratitude to the Chairman of GM for his confidence in this region and emphasize the high level of competence of GM’s workforce, the management and suppliers in Spain.

The GM plant in Spain started production of the new Opel Corsa generation on July 31, 2006. GM has invested 550 million euros into the extensive modernization of the Zaragoza facility. Within less than two months the plant has reached as much as 50% of the total daily production and will achieve full production by mid-November. A wide range of innovations has been introduced in the assembly of the new Opel Corsa to further improve quality, productivity and occupational safety while at the same time reducing the workload of manufacturing staff. With a workforce of 7,600 employees and an annual capacity of more than 400,000 vehicles, Zaragoza is GM’s largest European production facility and has produced Opel Corsas since it opened in 1982. It also builds the Opel Meriva and will start manufacturing the Opel Combo in late February 2007.

With this investment in its Zaragoza facility, GM has further improved its competitive position in Europe.
