DEARBORN, Mich. , May 23, 2007 – Helping turn tonight’s American Idol season finale’s red carpet “green” will be the new 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid, the official vehicle of the red carpet. Ford is providing 30 of its Escape Hybrid SUVs to transport finalists and other VIPs to the season finale.

“Ford’s partnership with American Idol has been very successful over the past six seasons,” says Ed Molchany, Ford’s marketing communications manager. “Idol has become a cultural phenomenon, and it provides Ford a great opportunity to showcase our many new vehicles to a very diverse audience. As the most fuel efficient SUV on the planet, we think the Ford Escape Hybrid will fit right in with the rest of the stars on the red carpet tonight.”

As part of a global initiative across all News Corp. businesses, FOX has recently launched a massive effort to reduce their energy use and impact on climate change. As part of the network’s “Cool Change” initiative, FOX is providing hybrid transportation for American Idol finalists and other VIPs, as well as instituting other programs during the American Idol finals to reduce their carbon footprint.
Ford has been a proud sponsor of American Idol since its debut season in June of 2002. Its sponsorship includes branded content and integration into the show, and for season six, that included Ford-branded segments during the first eight weeks and original music videos featuring Ford vehicles in each of the final 11 shows. Ford also partnered with Americanidol.com for the AI Challenge, a weekly sweepstakes promotion where consumers could win weekly trips to watch the show live and win a grand prize of $100,000.

Most Fuel Efficient SUV on the Planet

Achieving up to 34 mpg in city driving, the new 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient SUV on the planet. It combines the fuel economy and emissions benefits of a “full” hybrid with the go-anywhere capability, toughness and spaciousness of the Ford Escape.

Unlike other “mild” hybrid vehicles, Ford Escape Hybrid can run on 100 percent electric power up to about 30 mph, maximizing in-city fuel economy. Ford Escape Hybrid automatically switches between pure electric power, pure gasoline engine power or combined operation of the two to maximize efficiency and performance. The Ford Escape Hybrid was the first American-made hybrid vehicle, and the world’s first hybrid SUV.

Not only will the finalists be environmentally-friendly in their vehicle upon for arrival at the American Idol finale’s red carpet, but they will also be “green” when it comes to the interior materials available in the Ford Escape. The 2008 Ford Escape and Ford Escape Hybrid is the first U.S. automotive application of seating surfaces made from 100 percent post-industrial materials – plastics and polyester fibers that would have otherwise ended up in landfills. Supplied by InterfaceFABRIC, Inc., the ecologically friendly seat cloth conserves an estimated 600,000 gallons of water, an estimated 1.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents, and the equivalent of more than 7 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually.
