23rd November 2005 -- Led by GM Performance Division and Chevrolet, with engineering collaboration from Lotus Engineering among others, the Chevy Cobalt SS Supercharged finished with the fastest time overall (1:51) and first in the Front Engine Front Drive (FF) Unlimited Class at the Toyo Tires Time Attack presented by Super Street and eurotuner magazines on Nov. 8.
Lotus Engineering provided calibration and engineering support to help maximize the performance of the base supercharged 2.0L ECOTEC engine in the Cobalt SS, which for this Time Attack competition delivered 283 horsepower at 6840 rpm and 243 lb.-ft. of torque at 4200 rpm without the added nitrous oxide.

“Being able to watch the Cobalt SS Supercharged win the Toyo Tires Time Attack was amazing after handling the calibration aspect of the supercharged 2.0-liter ECOTEC engine,” commented Tim Holland, director of Powertrain Engineering at Lotus’ USA office in Michigan.

“Time Attack races have historically been dominated by the Japanese, so being a part of the first domestic team to win this particular event is very rewarding.” The Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged fought off more than 50 competitors driving such vehicles as the Nissan Skyline, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Ford Mustang and Dodge Neon to record the fastest time overall. The Ford and Dodge cars were the only other domestic entries.

Time Attack racing has been popular in Japan for some time, and finally made its way to America in 2003. Taking cues from the Japanese challenges, Time Attack races feature street-based cars on DOT-approved tires trying to complete the fastest flying lap time possible on a given track.
