Toyota has introduced the 2009 model of its fourth generation of Tarago family wagons, with the added passive safety feature of active front-seat head restraints. Active head restraints are part of an overall facelift and features upgrade for all 2.4-litre four-cylinder and 3.5-litre V6 Tarago models. The WIL (whiplash injury lessening) active front-seat head restraint system has an absorber at the base of the seat backrest, linked by cable to an upper unit, which in turn activates the head restraint.
In a rear-end collision, the occupant's body weight acts on the absorber pad.
The energy is transferred via the cable to the upper unit. The upper unit moves the whole head restraint closer to the occupant's head, to reduce potential injury to the neck.
Tarago's key functionality improvement is the adoption of door ajar, auto-close side doors on Tarago GLi and GLX model grades.
In addition, Tarago now has Hill start Assist Control (HAC) as standard equipment on four-cylinder GLX and Ultima, and all V6 models.
HAC is available on Tarago GLi as part of the optional safety pack.
Convenience features include the addition of a rear-seat conversation mirror on all Tarago models.
Tarago's exterior changes include new alloy wheel designs, a new exterior colour and a new front mask.
The radiator grille has been positioned lower, with a newly designed Toyota logo at its centre.
The new front mask also includes a redesigned headlamp cleaner and a cold air intake for the air-cooled automatic transmission fluid cooler.
At the rear, Tarago has new combination lamps and garnishes - with a spoiler-like design where the lamps wrap around the surface.
Inside, Tarago has an improved instrument panel with grey metallic displays to enhance visibility.
The Optitron meter graphics in V6 GLX and Ultima have been adjusted to increase visibility and clarity.
Two new interior trim colours have been adopted - Mid Grey for four-cylinder models and Sandstone for V6 models.
The sandstone interior trim is matched to a yellow-brown eucalyptus-like wood grain in V6 GLX and Ultima.
Tarago also has a new silver-colour instrument panel centre ornament and the door trim power window switch base is a brighter silver colour.
