Lincoln Navigator Aims For Full-Size Luxury SUV Niche Review

With its dramatically restyled exterior, a first-time extended model option and an interior package billed as the quietest and most comfortable Navigator yet, Lincoln is taking direct aim at Cadillac in the full-size luxury SUV category with the upcoming launch of the 2007 Lincoln Navigator.

2007 Lincoln Navigator

Originally introduced in February at the Chicago Auto Show, the redesigned Navigator and “Navigator L” extended-length model are scheduled to arrive in dealerships this August. The launch comes as overall SUV sales continue to slip, with more customers opting for smaller crossover utility vehicles (CUVs).

“Despite the segment slowdown, there remains a set of customers out there who absolutely need what a luxury full-size SUV can provide,” said Sudhir Sahay, Lincoln SUV/Truck marketing manager. “The functionality, capability – in terms of the number of people or amount of cargo they carry – and luxury amenities continue to play an important role.”

“The introduction of the Navigator L gives Lincoln an answer for Cadillac's extended model, the Escalade ESV,” said George Pipas, manager, Ford sales analysis. “There are a number of customers who currently don't look at the Navigator because of space considerations. These are people who will soon have a reason to look again at Lincoln."

Nearly 15 inches longer than the base model, the Navigator L gives buyers an additional 24 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the third-row seat.

"Exactly how big of a sales boost we'll see from the Navigator L is hard to gauge," said Ed Witt, owner, Witt Lincoln Mercury in San Diego. “Even though our overall Navigator volume is down, a certain part of the consumer base still wants and needs what the Navigator provides. This is not Europe. There remains a market for large family people movers.”

Offering a Dramatic, Distinctive Design

With a more pronounced chrome grille, a "powerdome" hood, new wing-shaped taillamps and optional 20-inch chrome wheels, the 2007 Lincoln Navigator looks to make a powerful first impression.

“The dramatic design conveys power, both from under the hood and from the feeling a driver gets behind the wheel,” said Chelsia Lau, Lincoln Navigator chief designer. “What modern luxury buyers are looking for -- and what we’ve delivered in Navigator -- are superior craftsmanship and exquisite detail.”

Interior Provides Luxury, Entertainment

On the inside, satin-nickel and wood grain accents compliment a flowthrough center console, while premium soft leather seating and additional noise-dampening insulation make the 2007 Lincoln Navigator the quietest ever.

“Our original targets were a significant improvement over the already stringent levels we set with the previous Navigator,” said John Viera, Navigator chief nameplate engineer. “But as the program progressed, we made such dramatic improvements in quietness we had to set new targets. The result is a vehicle that will provide our customers with a truly unexpected quality of quietness on the road.”

For the sounds customers want to hear, Lincoln Navigator offers a first-in-class, 600-watt, 14 speaker THX® II-certified premium audio system with six-disc CD changer. A voice-activated DVD-based navigation system and rear-seat passenger entertainment system are also optional.

Standard 10-way power driver and front passenger seats are designed to comfortably accommodate occupants ranging from 4-foot-10 to 6-foot-5, and from 90 pounds up to 300 pounds. The front seats also offer next-generation heating and cooling capability.

Premium seating extends to an available 40/20/40-split second row and 60/40-split third row.

Performance, Capability Still Navigator's Hallmark

An all-new chassis for 2007 results in a 10 percent improvement in Navigator’s torsional rigidity, while a second-generation independent rear suspension system helps provides improved ride and handling.

The 2007 Lincoln Navigator is powered by Ford's 5.4-liter Triton V-8 engine, rated at 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque, which when properly equipped can tow up to 9,200 pounds.

Safety Features Include 3-row Canopy

Lincoln Navigator’s safety package includes Ford's exclusive AdvanceTrac? with Roll Stability Control standard on both the Navigator and Navigator Ultimate models.

Additional standard safety features include: • Dual-stage second-generation drive and front passenger air bags. • Three-row Safety Canopy™ side curtain air bags • Seat-mounted side air bags

Larger front and rear brake calipers and thicker rotors also improve durability and stopping capability.
