Andrea Chowanic is a chocoholic and an 11-year Ford veteran of developing and testing navigation systems. Using personal passion and professionalism, she instructed her team of eight troubleshooters to fan across the United States and Canada for a monthlong, intensive reality check of the new multilingual single-DVD-based Ford Lincoln Mercury navigation system found in the Lincoln MKZ and soon to be in Lincoln’s new crossover, the MKX.
Chowanic told her troubleshooters to find the premier chocolatier in their designated region — no matter how obscure or urbane — and bring back samples for the group. The result was sweet, for the team’s tastes and, more importantly, as the ultimate test of the new audio-visual mapping system — by far the most specific yet created.

“I love my work, and I like to make it fun,” says Product Planner Chowanic. “I also wanted to emulate a real-life situation and search for something a typical tourist in any urban center or tiny town might want.”

The Lincoln navigation system adds the convenience of touch-screen controls and intuitive menus for access to its features. The system encompasses the vast majority of North America on a single DVD, making it easier to find the perfect chocolatier, coffee shop or Chinese restaurant, no matter where you are. The system features a 6.5-inch-wide screen that is sharper than most. The most advanced Lincoln navigation system ever uses text-to-speech technology that delivers travel directions aloud in English, Spanish or French.
Incidentally, Chowanic’s team had a tantalizingly tough time deciding on Teuscher Chocolatier in Boston as North America’s chocolate champion. And, for those with a sudden craving, you can bet that Teuscher, along with other mouth-watering contenders, is now listed in the navigation system’s directory.
