This new entity has been made possible thanks to the cooperation agreement reached last April between the IQS and SEAT.The new laboratory has entailed an investment of 120,000 euros, and has been up and running since the beginning of the academic year. Its mandate is to offer practical information in the field of automobile mechanics to IQS Industrial Engineering students, as well as encourage research in the same field so as to further technological development. The opening ceremony was also attended by Ramón Paredes, SEAT Vice President for Human Resources; Frank Bekemeier, SEAT Vice President for Research & Development; Joan Trullén, General Secretary of Industry of Spanish Ministery of Industry and Dr. Enric Julià, Director General of the IQS. Frank Bekemeier, SEAT Vice-President for R&D, highlighted “the multiplying effect brought about by institutional collaboration with a prestigious academic centre such as the IQS vis-à-vis technology transfer, at a moment in time that is of vital importance for the sector in general and for a company like SEAT in particular –namely to boost R&D activities with a view to guaranteeing its competitiveness”. On behalf of the IQS, Dr. Enric Julià said that “setting up this laboratory will mean that we can further improve the training of our future industrial engineers in the automobile industry, one of the most important sectors in Catalonia, and one with the greatest demand for engineers on the labour market”. The new laboratory has been equipped with state-of-the-art car technology and components, provided by SEAT and targeted at the mechanical side of Industrial Engineering studies. The most salient equipment comprises various engines, a complete car, a chassis, bodywork and various benches. SEAT joined forces with the IQS in the training of its Industrial Engineering students in the automobile field in 2001. The agreement signed in April also provides for collaboration between the two entities in setting up a specialised postgraduate course in Automobile Engineering, as well as organising seminars, lectures, research and development work, providing technical services to third parties and visits. The Instituto Químico de Sarriá is a century-old institution, founded in 1905 by the Jesuits, and is a founding member of the Universidad Ramon Llull. Currently, the IQS runs courses in Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, plus a degree course in Chemistry, at the IQS Higher Technical College; it also offers a degree in Business Administration as well as a Diploma in Business Studies at the IQS Faculty of Economics.
