The new Škoda Octavia made it to the finals on the basis of its victory in the Czech national round, nominated by the readers of AutoTIP, a franchise counterpart of the German Auto Bild, during a preceding survey. The finalists of the survey were comprised of 38 nominated automobile novelties. The 10 finalists included the following models: Audi A6; BMW models 1, 6, X3; Citroen C4; Ford Focus; Mercedes SLK; Opel Astra; Peugeot 407; and Škoda Octavia. The final score was the total of the results obtained in individual categories. In the readers’ category, the score depended on the results of run-up surveys conducted in 21 member countries. Other categories were evaluated by race drivers, professional technicians, and chief editors of the groups represented in Auto Bild. Their rating was based on weeklong intensive testing on the Vizzola racing grounds near Milan, Italy. The new Škoda Octavia won 2nd place in the chief editors’ category and 1st place in the professional technicians’ category. The latter evaluation was based on such criteria as quality of workmanship, environmental friendliness, facilitation of repairs and maintenance, and safety of operation. In addition to its prominent placement in the Auto 1 survey, the new Škoda Octavia was also awarded the title “Automobile of the Year 2005 in the Czech Republic“, “Most Beautiful Automobile of the Year 2004“ in Milan, “Automobile of the Year 2005 “ in Finland, “Automobile of the Year 2005” in Lithuania, “Automobile of the Year 2005” in Bulgaria, and “Automobile of the Year 2005” in Serbia and Montenegro.
