The best crew of the 24th edition of a traditional motor fuel efficiency contest, the “2005 Economy Run”, made up of Michal Šimůnek and Radka Šimůnková, achieved an average consumption of 3.063 litres per 100 kilometres driving a Fabia Estate 1.9 TDI PD/74 kW. They completed the almost 600 kilometres long route leading along the roads in the Central Bohemian region recording an average speed of 54.078 kph. A not much higher level of consumption was reached by Petr Farník and Zdeněk Urban, the best crew in the petrol engine category. Driving a Škoda Fabia 1.2 HTP/47 kW, they made it to the finish at Kosmonosy near Mladá Boleslav with an average consumption of 3.533 litres per 100 km (with an average speed of 53.66 kph).
The point of this “Economy Run” traditional motor contest is to prove that it is possible to achieve a good average cruising speed with low fuel consumption even in heavy traffic when driving the current modern cars. Only unmodified Škoda cars designed for common road traffic are eligible to take part in the competition. Any individual adjustment including removal of some items of equipment (seats, folding the mirrors, etc.) shall result in disqualification from the contest. Tyre pressure, among other things, is inspected before and after the contest with permitted allowance according to regulations specified by the manufacturer.

The so-called Fuel Efficiency Index (FEI) taking into account the weight of the competition vehicles is used for evaluation of the overall ranking in the respective groups (petrol and diesel engines respectively) and categories. The FEI is calculated as one tenth of the arithmetic mean of double consumption achieved and consumption applied to 1 ton of the vehicle’s weight using the following formula: FEI = 1/10 x (2xN + N/m)/3 (where “N” is the average consumption achieved in litres while “m” is the kerb weight of the vehicle).

This year’s 24th edition of the “Economy Run” contest was entered by a total of 64 Škoda Fabia, Octavia, and Superb model range cars including 41 cars in the “petrol engine” cars category and 23 cars in the “diesel engine” category. The contest was livened up by participation of 14 crews of local and foreign motoring journalists. Miroslav Hájek, an editor of the daily MD Dnes, won the separate “media” category among the petrol engines. Driving a Fabia 1.4 16V/55 kW, he recorded a consumption of 4.389 l/100 km with an average speed of 53.798 kph. The journalist crew of Karel Beránek and Jana Beránková was the best among the diesel engines driving a Fabia Estate 1.9 TDI PD/74 kW (recording an average consumption of 3.68 l/100 km with an average speed of 53.938 kph).
